Tough training in the mindset and abilities needed for more self-managing employees and teams
The programme is designed to help participants find and distinguish a mindset and a way of being as a leader that is more empowering, and practice new abilities. To move from a traditional (automatic) parent-child dynamic to an alternative (chosen) adult-adult dynamic.
“How can I be an effective, powerful leader without being like a parent?”
Skills and abilities
Participants will:
• Give away authority, create trust-based relationships
• Be able to give feedback in an empowering way that makes a difference
• Master adult-adult dialogues
• Increase their abilities to have “difficult conversations”
• Be able to hold colleagues/employees accountable
• Lead conversations that catalyst others capacity
• Pose powerful questions that move things forward
• Stop being reactive and become aware of their automatic patterns (what concerns interactions with others)
• Be able to be authentic and not play a role (a role being: “this is how a leader should behave”)
Time period
The programme consists of 6 modules spread over 10 weeks. Each module is an afternoon (13:00-17:00 CET) and a subsequent morning (9:00-12:00 CET). Between each module week there is a week when you try out your learnings at work.

We have developed our own, effective methods to rapidly train managers in becoming competent leaders with new leadership mindset.
Our methods are rooted in the experiments of our co-founder, Karin Tenelius who, from the 1990s onwards, transformed nearly a dozen companies into self-managing organisations through coaching the managers and teams to collaborate in a radically decentralised way.
"I had no idea it was such a totally new way of looking at things" Gustav Henman, founder of Beetroot
Listen to three people from the IT company Beetroot's main takeaways from the Tuff Leadership Training
-
“So, if Agile provides the systems and structures for nonhierarchical organization, Tuff Leadership Training provides the mindset that people in those organizations need to have to exercise their full potential.”
— Marin Petrov, Hack and Paint -
“I would consider this to be transformational training. It is utterly engaging and highly interactive.”
— Colin Lyons, Management Development, Howdens Joinery, UK -
“Great insight into yourself and how to understand the influence of mindsets on various types of conversations.”
— Enzo Smrekar, General Manager at Atlantic Grupa and President of the board at Droga Kolinska d.d., Slovenia -
“A powerful and empowering experience in which you are confronted with your way of being with others and struggle to improve, not only as a professional, but mainly as a human being.”
— Felip Roca, Director of International Relations, Municipality of Barcelona -
“If you are interested to develop yourself as a leader (in any way), this is the course for you! It will shake you and your views around and spit you out with a new mindset :)”
— Gustav Henman, CFO and Founder, Beetroot, Ukraine -
“For me it’s not a training in the sense that I learned something. It opened up a world, a world I did not realise was out there.”
— Hans Oude Nijhuis, Manager and Project Leader, BAM, The Netherlands -
“Epiphany guaranteed. ”
— Jesper Loso, Chief Developer/Team Lead, Dugga AB, Ukraine -
“A completely new perspective on leadership and what it means to be a leader.”

“It seems to give fulfilment to the colleagues we thought were only able to grow in the realm of technology...Then they did the Tuff Leadership Training and all of a sudden they see that they want to do more leadership development and develop how to work with people in self-steering teams. They are stepping up in their roles...”
— Kevin Struis, Coach and Mission Critical Engineer, Schuberg Philis, The Netherlands -
“The Tuff Leadership Training has been very impactful for me. It was great to be in a room full of colleagues working with our way of being and the things under our analytical minds...The most valuable lesson for me was about listening. I always found it to be really hard work, but during the course that changed and I could see that it was actually a really simple but powerful gift to be able to give to somebody, especially as a coach. For me that was a major mindset shift.”
— Kevin Struis, Coach and Mission Critical Engineer, Schuberg Philis, The Netherlands -
“The real results are that people are happy with the training and they want more. They use it. They have all benefited from it personally and they all grew in the “know thyself” department. And I think that that’s what it’s all about.”
— Lotta Croiset van Uchelen Feberwee, Chief DNA Officer, Schuberg Philis, The Netherlands -
“Brutal, honest, thought provoking and ultimately enriching experience. ”
— Neil Van Niekerk, Learning and Org Development Manager, Macmillan, UK -
“A very complete and balanced course with a great mix of theory and practice. A true inspiration and motivation. It will help me everywhere.”
— Paulo Parini, Professor, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden -
“It’s hard to shift from predictable machinery to new ways and Tuff Leadership Training helps at the most challenging level for this: individually.”
— Perry Timms, author of “Transformational HR” and TEDx speaker -
“I would recommend Tuff Leadership Training to any company that aspires to be a modern, Agile organisation, and to all managers/leaders (formal as well as informal leaders). ”
— Richard Kronfält, Global Head of Delivery, Alite International -
“Not an easy ride, but a challenging, thought provoking experience that will make you want to explore your potential.”
— Stephen Holman, Head of Technical Support, Holmen -
“A training in coaching and conversations theory that works ... and lots of practice. A mind shift! Excellent and very useful!”
— Susanne Stenberg, Project Manager, KPN, The Netherlands -
“In a non-hierarchical structure, for efficiency, cooperation and a good working environment, coaching is key. The decisions must come from the team and not from above. Tuff’s courses help to implement coaching in the company in a very practical way. ”
— Veronique Daar, VP Customer Support, Tacton Systems
Frequently Asked Questions about the Tuff Leadership Training Step 1 online
Who is this course aimed at?
Anyone in a leadership position (people management, project management) or working in a self-managing (flatter) organisation.
Is this course for new leaders or only experienced, senior leaders?
Leaders of all levels get value out of the training and we frequently have a mix of experience levels in our courses.
I have no “people management” responsibilities, is this course for me?
We frequently have participants attend who have no people management responsibilities – individual contributors, freelancers, Agile coaches and many others. They get a lot out of the training in terms of having difficult conversations with colleagues, feedback, communication, insights into their personal pitfalls, and much more.
How many participants are there in the group?
On average there are 14-16 participants to ensure that each participant gets plenty of coaching and feedback in order to get the most out of the course.
How is this course different from others?
Unlike some leadership courses, this one contains comparatively little theory. It’s highly practical and most of the days will be spent practicing conversations and abilities, with plenty of feedback and coaching. (It’s underpinned by theory, of course, but the focus is on the practice!)
Do I have to attend all 6 modules?
Yes, the course is designed so that you need to participate in all modules to get the full benefits of the training. If you are ill or cannot attend for reasons unforeseen, you can join another group on different dates, when the group is formed.
Is it common for there to be participants from the same company attending?
We often have several people from the same companies attending, especially if it’s part of a company-wide transformation. The benefit of attending with peers from your organisation is of course that you leave with a shared understanding of the core concepts and can support each other after the course. One disadvantage for some is that they find it easier to train and be open when they don’t know the other participants.
Will I receive individual feedback on the course?
The course is designed to maximise opportunities for each participant to get tailored feedback and coaching, if they want it. Our experienced Tuff trainers see your qualities and your pitfalls and can support you in identifying areas for development.
